Itinerary

Travel towards the High Atlas Mountains via the highest road pass in Morocco, Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2,260m), offering a remarkable view of mountains, valleys and Berber villages. Upon descent, you will make your way to the amazing UNESCO-protected 16th century fortress, Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, where great classics like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator were made. You can take a walk across the river to this Kasbah. Then take the route of A Thousand Kasbahs towards the Skoura Oasis. Here you will visit the Kasbah of Amridil featured in many Moroccan brochures. Then on to the Rose Valley (Kellat M’gouna) known to produce Moroccan roses and its variety of beauty products. Your journey continues passing Tamnalt Hills, a bizarre rock creation hillside resembling monkey feet. End your day at Dades Gorge, a deep gorge of red and mauve rock.

Depart Dades Gorge to visit another deep oasis in Morocco, the Todra Gorge. Its walls are 300m (about 984.25 ft) tall and at their most narrow part, only a mere 20m apart. Spend some time appreciating this natural wonder before resuming your trip towards the Sahara Desert. Approaching Merzouga, you will see the first sand dunes of the desert, where your camels will be waiting to carry you across the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Then later in the afternoon saddle on your camels and make your way across the desert during a beautiful sunset for about 2 hours, before arriving at your camp for the night. Overnight in the Nomad tent under a night full of stars, Berber music and delicious food prepared for you by your guide. Ring in the New Years’ Eve Morocco desert in Erg Chebbi.

You will wake up to enjoy the sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, possibly the best moment of the Merzouga desert. After breakfast, you will travel to Fes by passing through the Ziz Valley Gorge and Midelt, an impressive mountain city with traditional buildings like those in southern Morocco. Located at 1,488m in altitude, it is well situated just at the foot of Jbel Ayachi (3,737m). Your journey continues via Azrou and the cedar forests where colonies of monkeys will keep you amused. Drop off at your Riad/Hotel in the evening.

Enjoy a full day sightseeing tour in Fes, which is the oldest of Morocco’s four “Imperial Cities”. The medieval city of Fes El Bali or “Old Fes” remains complete and is unspoiled. During your tour of this part of the town, you can visit the exotic BouInania Medersa, the Medina and the Kairaouine Mosque, where you may take photos of the wonderful courtyard from the main gate. The university of the same name, founded by Fatima Al Fihri in 859, is said to be the oldest university in the world. In the afternoon, you can visit Fes El Jdid, or “New Fes” and the Museum of Moroccan Arts. The night is spent in the riad.

After breakfast in your traditional riad, we drive over the beautiful valleys and the hills. We stop by the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis, the expansive Roman ruins, spread over a wide area with beautiful views. Following that, we go south as far as Meknes to visit its ancient medina and massive gates. After lunch, we visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, built in homage to the king, who passed away in 1961. His son and successor, Hassan II, who died in 1999, is also entombed here. You will spend the night in a beautiful riad.

Today, there will be time to explore the medieval fortified Muslim necropolis of the Chellah with views of the BouRegreg River. Later, we take the motorway to Casablanca, where a visit is scheduled to the spectacular Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Africa and decorated with beautiful tiling of the utmost craftsmanship. You may need to queue for tickets for a while there. The guided tours leave every hour and take about an hour.
