Trip Overview
A trek built around people, not just dunes
This trip follows the daily rhythm of Berber nomadic families who still move through the Erg Zehar dunes, one of the quietest corners of the Moroccan Sahara. It isn’t a scenic drive-by. Instead, it’s six days on foot and by camel, guided by people who grew up here — several of them from the very communities you’ll be walking with.
This trek sits alongside our other Sahara hiking and camel trekking tours. Like all of them, it can be tailor-made around your dates and pace.
Days are spent crossing tamarisk scrub, hamada plains, and rolling sand toward M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the open desert. At night, the group gathers in nomadic tents around a fire, where Taguella — traditional sand bread — bakes directly in the embers. A full rest day at Erg Zehar then leaves room for yoga, a cooking class, and simply watching the dunes change color at sunset.
A community-first model
The trip runs on a low-impact, community-first model. Guides and camel handlers come from local nomadic families, so income from the trek supports their households directly, rather than a distant tour operator. Have questions before booking? Get in touch and we’ll walk you through it.

Day By Day
Your 6-day route into Erg Zehar
A real sequence, not a suggested one — this is the order the trek actually follows, from the last paved road to the deep dunes and back.
Departure city → M’Hamid El Ghizlane → Lahnaniche camp
An early departure from Marrakech, Ouarzazate, or Agadir crosses the High Atlas and the Drâa Valley. Along the way, there are stops such as Ait Ben Haddou, Zagora, and the Tamegroute pottery workshops. Eventually, the road ends at M’Hamid El Ghizlane. From there, a car takes the luggage ahead, so you simply walk for about 30 minutes to reach your first desert camp at Lahnaniche.
Lahnaniche → Sidi Naji
Tents are folded onto the camels after breakfast. The walk then continues through tamarisk scrub and desert bush, signaling the approach of the middle ergs. In the distance, you can already see the mountains along the Algerian border.
Sidi Naji → Erg Zehar dunes
The walk continues toward the Erg Zehar dune field itself. Once you arrive, the camels rest while camp is set up. Then comes a Sahara sunset that few travelers ever see from this particular stretch of dunes.
Free day at Erg Zehar
A full rest day among the dunes, with time for optional yoga and meditation. In the afternoon, a hands-on cooking class with the nomads covers traditional desert cuisine. Later, the group climbs a dune crest for sunset, then spends the evening learning to bake Taguella sand bread over the campfire.
Erg Zehar → back to M’Hamid El Ghizlane
A 4x4 collects the group and luggage from Erg Zehar. From there, it’s a drive back across the dunes and hamada to M’Hamid El Ghizlane, where the night is spent at a hotel with a pool — a chance to unwind before the final leg.
M’Hamid El Ghizlane → Marrakech / Ouarzazate / Agadir
