Two brothers, one desert, no shortcuts

Ismail and Mustapha grew up in M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the open Sahara, among camel herders and caravan trails. Morocco Meander is the family-run company they built from that upbringing — and every trek we plan is still shaped by people who know this desert as home, not as a route on a map. We don’t run one fixed tour. Every desert trekking in Morocco trip into the Erg Chigaga Desert is built around who’s travelling: your dates, your fitness, your pace, and how deep into the dunes you want to go. The two itineraries below are starting points, not the limits of what we can arrange.

Caravan trekking

Walk or ride alongside a dromedary caravan led by nomadic herders. Camels carry the tents, food and water, and a new camp goes up in a new stretch of dune each evening — the classic way to cross Erg Chigaga.

Fixed camp + 4×4

Settle into one or two comfortable desert camps and take shorter guided walks or dune excursions from there, with a 4×4 vehicle on hand for transfers, supplies, and support — a gentler pace for the same dunes.

All our desert camps are insured, and led by guides who know the terrain, water sources and weather of Erg Chigaga first-hand.

What is the difference between a camel caravan trek and a fixed desert camp trek?+
A camel caravan trek moves every day: dromedaries carry the camping gear while you walk or ride alongside nomadic guides, and a new camp is built each evening. A fixed-camp trek instead uses one or two base camps supported by a 4×4, with shorter walks or excursions from a stationary desert camp. We can also blend the two.
Do treks start from Foum Zguid or M’Hamid El Ghizlane?+
Both serve as gateways into Erg Chigaga. Foum Zguid is common for shorter routes and camel caravans heading south through Lake Iriki National Park. M’Hamid El Ghizlane, home village of guides Ismail and Mustapha, is often used for longer expeditions and trips built around more time with nomadic families. We’ll suggest the better fit once we know your itinerary.
Where can my trip depart from?+
Marrakech, Ouarzazate, or Agadir. Marrakech departures cross the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi n’Tichka pass; Ouarzazate is the shortest road transfer to the desert gateways; Agadir routes through the Anti-Atlas. Private transport is arranged from all three.
Is the desert camp safe and insured?+
Yes. Our desert camps carry insurance cover, and every trek is led by experienced local guides who know the terrain, the water sources, and the weather patterns of the Erg Chigaga region.
Can the itinerary be shortened or customized?+
Yes — that is how we prefer to work. We adjust the number of trekking days, the daily walking distance, the balance between walking and camel riding, and whether you travel with a moving caravan camp or a fixed camp with 4×4 support, to match your fitness, schedule and interests.
Who actually leads the treks?+
Ismail and Mustapha, two brothers born and raised in M’Hamid El Ghizlane on the edge of the Sahara, together with their team of local nomadic camel herders and desert guides.
What is the best time of year for trekking in the Sahara desert?+
October to April is best — mild days and cold, star-filled nights. May to September brings intense heat, so trips in those months are shortened and built around early mornings and evenings.
Do I need to be fit for a Sahara camel trekking tour?+
No special fitness is required for most itineraries. Riding and walking distances between camps are kept short and comfortable, and the pace is set by the group. If you want more of a physical challenge, we can build in longer walking days instead of riding.
What is the difference between Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi?+
Erg Chigaga is Morocco’s largest and most remote dune sea, reached via Foum Zguid or M’Hamid El Ghizlane, which keeps it far quieter than Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, a smaller and more road-accessible dune area. Our treks focus on the Erg Chigaga and Erg Zehar regions for a quieter, more nomadic experience.
Are these desert treks suitable for families and first-time travelers?+
Yes. Since every trip is tailor-made, itineraries for families or first-timers use shorter daily distances, a fixed desert camp with 4×4 support, and a slower pace — while more experienced trekkers can choose longer walking days and a moving caravan camp instead.
What’s included in the price of a trek?+
Typically: private transport from your departure city, camel or 4×4 support, an experienced local guide, insured desert camp accommodation, and meals during the trek. Exact inclusions are confirmed when we tailor-make your itinerary.
