Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before walking with nomads in Morocco
Walking With Nomads in Morocco is an 8-day immersive desert trek through the remote Erg Zehar dunes of the Sahara. You walk and ride camels alongside indigenous Berber nomadic tribes, learn to bake traditional sand bread, sleep in authentic nomadic tents under the stars, and experience the ancient rhythms of nomadic desert life — far from mass tourism.
Erg Zehar is a remote and little-visited dune system located near M'hamid El Ghizlane in southern Morocco. Unlike the more famous Erg Chebbi (Merzouga), Erg Zehar sees very few tourists, offering a genuine wilderness experience with real nomadic families. It is only accessible by 4WD or on foot — making it one of the most authentic Sahara destinations in Morocco.
The nomadic tribes encountered on this trek are indigenous Berber communities who have lived in and around the Sahara Desert for generations. Many of Morocco Meander's guides are themselves from these wandering communities, born and raised in M'hamid El Ghizlane on the edge of the desert. They share traditional knowledge of desert survival, navigation, cuisine, and culture.
Taguella, known as sand bread, is a traditional nomadic flatbread baked directly in hot desert sand and embers. It is one of the most iconic and ancient foods of the Saharan nomads. On Day 4 of the trek, you join the nomads in a hands-on cooking class learning the traditional art of baking Taguella — a deeply memorable and unique cultural experience.
The trek involves walking approximately 4 to 6 hours per day across sand dunes and desert terrain. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, but no previous trekking experience is required. Camels carry all luggage and equipment throughout the journey. The pace is relaxed and adapted to the group, with rest days built into the itinerary at Erg Zehar.
Nights 1 through 4 are spent in authentic nomadic tents set up in the desert — simple, comfortable, and deeply atmospheric under the Saharan stars. The final night before departure is spent at a hotel in M'hamid El Ghizlane with modern facilities and a swimming pool.
The tour is fully full-board — all meals are included throughout the 8 days. Food is prepared fresh by your nomadic guides using traditional Moroccan and Saharan recipes. Highlights include tagines cooked over desert fire, mint tea ceremonies, and the famous Taguella sand bread baked in the dunes.
Yes. Day 4 in Erg Zehar is a free and immersive day that includes the option of yoga and meditation sessions amid the dunes. The silence and stillness of the remote Sahara make it one of the most powerful settings imaginable for yoga and mindfulness practice.
Yes. This tour is built on the principles of responsible and sustainable eco-tourism. Morocco Meander works directly with local nomadic communities, supporting their livelihoods and preserving their cultural heritage. The tour aims for zero carbon footprint, uses no single-use plastics, and all income directly benefits the indigenous families encountered throughout the journey.
The tour can start from Marrakech, Agadir, or Ouarzazate — whichever is most convenient for your travel plans. It ends at the same city you departed from. Morocco Meander arranges all transfers both ways, so you simply need to arrive at your starting city.
The best time to trek through Erg Zehar is between October and April when daytime temperatures are comfortable for walking (20–28°C). Spring (March to May) is particularly beautiful with clear skies and mild evenings. July and August should be avoided due to extreme desert heat exceeding 45°C.
