OuarzazateA Night in the Erg Chebbi Dunes
This is why people choose one of the 3 days trips from Marrakech to Merzouga. A camp of your own in a dune field with room to feel alone, and a sky with nothing between you and the stars.
Into The Dunes
Ride a camel or take the Land Cruiser to camp as the light turns gold, then pink, then dark.
Dinner At Camp
A Moroccan dinner in the dunes, then time to stay out for the stars. Desert skies are very dark.
First Light
Wake early for sunrise over the sand, then have breakfast before the long drive back.
The dunes span an area of approximately 28 kilometers from north to south
, says Wikipedia's Erg Chebbi entry.
Two Private Vehicles, Matched To The Road
Different parts of this route need different vehicles. So we use two, with one English-speaking driver-guide for all three days.
Mercedes Vito
A private, air-conditioned Mercedes Vito handles the long paved sections: Marrakech to Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the road to Erfoud. It is comfortable for long days and has room for your luggage.
Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4
A private Toyota Land Cruiser takes you on the final stretch to camp and the more remote tracks. It is the vehicle built for desert surfaces, with a driver who knows them.
Tell us your group size and we match the vehicle to your party. Prefer one vehicle all the way? A Land Cruiser can cover the whole route on request.

3 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech: The Itinerary
Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
We collect you from your Marrakech hotel early. The road climbs into the High Atlas toward the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which Wikipedia calls the highest major mountain pass in North Africa
. Read more about the High Atlas.
Next is Ait Ben Haddou, a clay village on the old caravan route. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Wikipedia describes a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture
. Walk the old lanes with your guide.
After lunch (not included), stop at the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. Then drive on to the Dades Valley, where the road runs under red cliffs and rock shapes known as the Monkey Fingers. You sleep here, with dinner and breakfast included.
Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Merzouga
Day two is shorter, so you can enjoy it. First, the Todra Gorges near Tinghir, where the canyon has sheer and smooth rock walls up to 160 metres (525ft) high
, as Wikipedia's Todgha Gorge entry puts it. Walk the narrow section while it is still cool.
The road then crosses open, stony desert to Erfoud, the gateway to the dunes. By late afternoon you reach Merzouga. Here we switch to the Land Cruiser, or to camels, for the last part to camp.
Watch the sun set over Erg Chebbi. Dinner is served at camp, and you sleep in a luxury tent. Ask about ensuite tents and other upgrades. We confirm what is available when you book.
Merzouga → Nkob → Draa Valley → Marrakech
Rise early for sunrise on the dunes. After breakfast, head west toward Nkob and the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river at about 1,100 km. Its palm groves and mud-brick villages are some of the best sights of the trip. One caution: the river itself runs dry downstream of Tagounite for most of the year, so the green is in the upper valley (see the quote below).
From here the road runs back to Ouarzazate and over the Atlas to Marrakech. You arrive late in the evening. It is a very long day. If that worries you, read "Is 3 Days Enough?" below.

Is 3 Days Enough For Marrakech To Merzouga?
Many travelers book a 3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, and it works. But Merzouga is far from Marrakech. Over three days you spend a lot of time in the vehicle, and day three is the heaviest.
You have three ways to ease it:
- Add a night. Sleep in the Draa Valley or Ouarzazate on the way back. It turns one long day into two easy ones.
- Return a different way. End in Ouarzazate, Errachidia or Fes instead of driving back. Ask us about one-way routes.
- Cut a stop. Skip Nkob and take the faster road back via Ouarzazate.
Want a gentler pace? See our 4 day Marrakech to Erg Chigaga luxury tour, or our 3 day desert tour from Ouarzazate to Merzouga, which starts closer to the dunes.

Best Time To Go, And What To Pack
Best Time
- Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are usually the most comfortable.
- Winter days can be pleasant, but desert nights are cold.
- Summer is very hot in the south, so we plan it with care.
Pack List
- A warm layer for desert nights
- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- A scarf for sand and sun
- Comfortable closed shoes
- A small overnight bag for camp, with big bags left in the vehicle
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a 3 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga?
It depends on group size, hotel and camp choices, and any upgrades. We do not publish a fixed price. Send your dates and we reply with a personal quote.
Is the tour private?
Yes. Your group travels alone with your driver-guide. You are never mixed with other travelers.
Which vehicles do you use?
A private Mercedes Vito for the paved roads and a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 for the desert stretches. Both are air-conditioned.
How long are the drives each day?
Roughly 7 to 8 hours on day one, 4 to 5 hours on day two, and 11 to 13 hours on day three, including stops. Day three is the longest, so consider an extra night.
Is 3 days enough to see Merzouga from Marrakech?
It is enough to reach the dunes, sleep in the desert and return. It is not relaxed. A 4 day plan gives you more time at each stop.
Can I get a luxury camp?
Yes. We arrange a luxury tent in Erg Chebbi. Ensuite options and other upgrades depend on availability, which we confirm at booking.
Is a camel ride included?
A camel ride or a 4x4 transfer to camp is part of the plan. Tell us which you prefer.
What is not included?
Lunches, travel insurance, tips, extra activities such as quad biking, and personal expenses.
Can I end the trip somewhere other than Marrakech?
Often yes. We can end in Ouarzazate, Errachidia or Fes, or add days. Ask us about a one-way route.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please read our cancellation policy before booking. We can answer questions by WhatsApp or email.
