Quick Answer

This Marrakech to Erg Chigaga tour runs 4 days and 3 nights. Ismail and Mustapha organize it, and their team of local guides leads it. Transport is by a private, modern Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4. The route crosses Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Draa Valley before reaching Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s largest dune sea. Many travelers consider it among the best Erg Chigaga tours from Marrakech. It reaches dunes far quieter than Erg Chebbi.

Ait Ben Haddou. A UNESCO-listed kasbah used as a film backdrop for decades, visited on Day 1.

Erg Chigaga’s dunes. Morocco’s largest, most remote dune system, reached by 4x4 and camel.

Real nomadic encounters. Tea and conversation with Berber families who still live near the dunes.

Tamegroute’s library. Centuries-old manuscripts, including a gold-engraved Quran, in a working Sufi lodge.

Day By Day

The route from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga

Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Agdz

The route climbs the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reaching roughly 2,200 meters. A guided walk through Ait Ben Haddou’s kasbah breaks the drive.

Past Ouarzazate and its film studios, the road follows the Draa Gorges into Agdz. Evening is spent in this small palm-lined town.

Day 2

Agdz → Zagora → Tamegroute → Erg Chigaga

A detour to ancient rock engravings near Foum Chenna leads into Zagora. The town holds a centuries-old Jewish quarter and a silver jewelry craft.

Tamegroute’s pottery workshops and manuscript library follow. Past the last paved road, the final stretch to Erg Chigaga crosses open desert.

Day 3

Erg Chigaga Desert

A slower day, spent visiting local nomadic families over tea and walking out to a quiet desert oasis on foot.

Later, camels or a short hike lead to the highest dunes for sunset. Dinner under the stars follows back at camp.

Day 4

Erg Chigaga → Foum-Zguid → Tazenakht → Marrakech

A sunrise walk among the dunes precedes the crossing back through dry lakebeds and acacia-dotted plains toward Foum-Zguid.

Tazenakht, known for its Berber rugs, breaks up the return drive before reaching Marrakech by early evening.

Why This Route

One of the best Erg Chigaga tours from Marrakech

Most desert tours from Marrakech head to Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga. This one goes further south instead, to Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s largest and least visited dune system.

The extra distance matters. Erg Chigaga takes a full day of driving beyond the paved road to reach. Far fewer visitors make it there, so the dunes stay quiet even in peak season.
