Quick Answer

This Erg Chigaga desert tour from Marrakech runs 7 days and 6 nights. It's also known as an Erg Chigaga and Essaouira tour, since the route joins both in one trip. Ismail and Mustapha organize it, and their team of local guides leads it. Transport is by a private, modern Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4. The route crosses the High Atlas Mountains to Erg Chigaga’s remote dunes. From there it continues to the Atlantic coast at Essaouira, before returning to Marrakech. It suits travelers who want a fuller Marrakech desert and coast tour, not just a single destination.

Erg Chigaga’s remote dunes. Among the largest and least visited dune fields in Morocco, reached by 4x4 and camel.

Real nomadic encounters. Tea and conversation with Berber families who still live near the dunes.

Historic kasbahs. Ait Ben Haddou, Agdz, and Taourirt trace centuries of trans-Saharan trade routes.

Essaouira’s Atlantic coast. A UNESCO-listed medina, fresh seafood, and two full nights to explore.

Adventurers

Camel trekking, sandboarding, and off-road 4x4 tracks to remote dunes. Explore more on our Morocco adventure tours page.

Slow Travelers

Two full nights in the desert and two in Essaouira, instead of one-night stops. Fewer places, more time in each.

The Hamada rock desert, the dry bed of Lake Iriki, and ancient engravings near Foum Chenna. See our geology & archaeology tours.

Day By Day

The route from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga and Essaouira

Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Agdz

The route climbs the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reaching roughly 2,260 meters. A stop at the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou breaks the drive.

From Ouarzazate, the road follows the Draa Gorges toward Agdz. Evening is spent in this small palm-lined town on the edge of the Sahara.

Day 2

Agdz → Zagora → M’Hamid → Erg Chigaga

A detour to ancient rock engravings near Foum Chenna leads into Zagora. The town holds a centuries-old Jewish quarter and a silver jewelry craft.

Past M’Hamid, the tarmac ends. The final approach to the Erg Chigaga dunes is made by camel, ending at a private desert camp.

Day 3

Erg Chigaga Desert

A slower day, spent visiting local nomadic families over tea and exploring a nearby desert oasis on foot.

In the afternoon, camels carry the group to the highest dunes to watch the sunset over the Sahara.

Day 4

Erg Chigaga → Foum-Zguid → Tazenakht → Taroudant

A sunrise walk among the dunes precedes a crossing of the rocky Hamada and the dry bed of Lake Iriki.

Tazenakht, known for its Berber rugs, breaks up the drive west before reaching Taroudant by evening.

Day 5

Taroudant → Agadir → Essaouira

A morning free to explore Taroudant’s souks and city walls, known locally for argan oil and honey.

The route then follows the Atlantic coast north to Essaouira, arriving in time for an evening in the medina.

Day 6

Essaouira Sightseeing

A full day to wander the whitewashed medina, its art galleries, fishing port, and old fortifications, at your own pace.

Day 7

Essaouira → Marrakech

A final morning on a quiet stretch of beach outside town, before the drive back to Marrakech in the afternoon.

Why This Route

Desert and coast, without retracing your steps

Most Marrakech desert tours turn back the way they came. This one doesn’t. After Erg Chigaga, the route continues west to the Atlantic instead. Two very different sides of Morocco fit into a single trip.

It also reaches a quieter part of the Sahara. Erg Chigaga sees far fewer visitors than Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. It takes a full day of driving beyond the paved road to arrive. For travelers who want distance from the usual desert-tour circuit, that isolation is the point.

Related routes are available too. See our shorter 4-day Erg Chigaga tour, the full Erg Chigaga tours hub, or the broader Marrakech private tours page.
