Eight days, Casablanca to Marrakech
Rabat, the northern coast, Chefchaouen, Fez, the Sahara, and Ait Ben Haddou, on one continuous route.
Casablanca → Rabat → Asilah → Tangier
We start at the Hassan II Mosque, its minaret rising over the Atlantic, then drive to Rabat for the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.
In the afternoon we continue to Asilah, known for its Portuguese ramparts and mural-covered medina, before arriving in Tangier for the night.
Tangier → Chefchaouen
We visit Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules before exploring Tangier's medina, then drive through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, with free time to wander its blue-painted streets and squares.
Chefchaouen → Fez
A relaxed morning in Chefchaouen before we head toward Fez through olive groves and traditional villages. Optional stops can be added at the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes.
We arrive in Fez and settle into a traditional riad in the heart of the medina.
Fez Guided Tour
A licensed local guide leads you through Fez el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site National Geographic describes as "a living, earthy (yet car-free) town", visiting the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Chouara Tannery, and panoramic viewpoints over the medina.
Fez → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Ziz Valley → Merzouga
We cross the Middle Atlas through Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco," and the cedar forests home to Barbary macaques, then follow the palm-lined Ziz Valley south.
By late afternoon we reach Merzouga, where a camel ride carries you into the dunes for a luxury desert camp under the stars.
Merzouga → Rissani → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley
Sunrise over the dunes, then a visit to Rissani's traditional market before the Todra Gorges, where towering canyon walls invite a walk along the riverbed.
We continue to the Dades Valley for an overnight stay surrounded by dramatic rock formations.
Dades Valley → Roses Valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech
We drive through the Roses Valley's kasbahs and rose fields to Ouarzazate, then Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO site UNESCO calls "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco" and familiar from several film productions.
We cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, arriving in Marrakech by evening.
