Eleven days through the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara
Marrakech to Marrakech, by way of Taroudant, Tafraoute, the granary villages, and Erg Chigaga.
Marrakech City Tour
A guided day through Marrakech built for photography, starting at the Jardin Majorelle's cobalt-blue buildings, then the souks for color and texture.
We visit the Bahia Palace's courtyards before ending at Jemaa el-Fnaa Square at dusk, where performers and market vendors light up the evening.
Marrakech → Tizi n'Test → Taroudant
We climb the High Atlas via Asni and the 13th-century Tinmel Mosque, crossing the Tizi n'Test pass at 2,000 meters for sweeping views south.
We descend to Taroudant, with time for the souks or a caleche ride around the 16th-century city walls.
Taroudant → Ighrem → Tafraoute
We stop in Frejia to see a traditional kasbah, then climb to 1,800 meters for a Berber granary once used to store grain. In Tafraoute, we explore the Ameln Valley and the Painted Rocks, a 1984 land-art project where Belgian artist Jean Vérame aimed to evoke "the natural vibration of the cosmos" across the pink granite boulders.
Tafraoute → Smougen → Icht
A valley reminiscent of Utah or Arizona leads us south. We stop for tea at Smougen's palm-carved mesas, then meet a nomad family and visit a women's cooperative to see handicrafts made on-site.
Icht → Amtoudi → Icht
We visit one of Amtoudi's two Berber granaries towering over the settlement, then walk the gorges with a local guide, past natural pools and flint-strewn hollows.
Icht → Akka → Ait Kine → Akka Ighrem → Foum Zguid
We visit Akka's palm grove and a centuries-old mosque linked to the Saadi-era gold trade, then the granary and medersa at Ait Kine, and a restored ksar at Akka Ighrem where residents have returned to their family homes.
Foum Zguid → Erg Chigaga
The track alternates between cobblestone, gravel, and sand as we cross toward Erg Chigaga, spotting fossils along the way. Camels carry you the final stretch to a luxury desert camp for the night.
Erg Chigaga → M'Hamid → Tamegroute → Zagora
A morning among the dunes, then tea with nomads on the drive to M'Hamid. We follow the Draa Valley's palm forest to Tamegroute, known for green-glazed pottery and a centuries-old library, before reaching Zagora.
Zagora → Tamnougalt → Agdz → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou
The Kasbah of Tamnougalt, once a major caravan stop toward Marrakech, leads into a string of ochre villages along the Draa. We cross Ouarzazate for Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO site UNESCO calls "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco", then Tamedaght, the small kasbah village that stood in for the set of Gladiator.
Ait Ben Haddou → Telouet → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech
An early return to Ait Ben Haddou catches the best light before breakfast. We continue through the Ounila Valley's abandoned kasbahs and terraced fields to Telouet, then over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 meters into Marrakech by late afternoon.
