Quick Answer

A 3 day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech runs through Ifrane and the Middle Atlas cedar forest, Midelt and the Ziz Valley to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga. You sleep in a desert camp on night one. Day two takes you through Erfoud and the Todra Gorges to the Dades Valley. Day three crosses Ouarzazate, Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas to Marrakech. It is private and tailor-made, and it replaces one long transfer with a real journey.

One-way, no backtracking. You end in Marrakech, so every kilometre is new.

Desert on night one. You reach the dunes on day one and have the evening and sunrise there.

Private, never shared. Your own driver-guide and vehicle.

Honest pacing. Day one is long. We show you how to ease it.

Night One

A Night in the Erg Chebbi Dunes

Many 3 day desert tours from Fes spend the first night in a hotel and reach the dunes late. Ours puts the desert first, so you wake up in it.

Sunset

Into The Dunes

Ride a camel or take a 4x4 to camp as the light turns gold, then pink, then dark.

Evening

Dinner At Camp

A Moroccan dinner in the dunes, then time for the stars. Desert skies are very dark.

Sunrise

First Light

Wake early for sunrise over the sand, then breakfast before you drive on.

The dunes span an area of approximately 28 kilometers from north to south, says Wikipedia's Erg Chebbi entry.

3 Day Desert Tour from Fes: The Itinerary

Day
01

Fes → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

About 8 to 9 hours · Mercedes Vito or Land Cruiser

We collect you from your Fes hotel early. The road climbs into the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, a town of alpine-style roofs that locals nickname Little Switzerland, per Wikipedia. It also holds the record for the lowest temperature ever observed in Africa, the same entry notes.

Next is the cedar forest near Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. The species is endangered: Wikipedia says wild populations have suffered a major decline in recent years. Please do not feed them.

After lunch (not included) in Midelt, the road drops through the Ziz Valley. The Ziz is a river that flows 282 kilometers (175 mi) into the Sahara Desert, according to Wikipedia. Palm oases and kasbahs line the way to Erfoud and Merzouga. The last stretch to camp is by 4x4 or camel, then sleep in your luxury tent. Dinner and breakfast are included.

Day
02

Merzouga → Erfoud → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley

About 4 to 5 hours · Mercedes Vito or Land Cruiser

Rise early for sunrise on the dunes, then have breakfast at camp. Drive back through Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops, and across open stony desert to Tinghir.

The Todra Gorges are next, where cliffs rise on both sides of a narrow river canyon. Walk the cool, narrow section with your guide. Read more in our High Atlas guide.

You sleep in the Dades Valley, under red cliffs and rock shapes known as the Monkey Fingers. It is a shorter day, so you can rest and enjoy the evening. Dinner and breakfast are included.

Day
03

Dades Valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

About 6 to 7 hours · Mercedes Vito or Land Cruiser

Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate and the Taourirt Kasbah. Then comes Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wikipedia calls it a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture.

After lunch (not included), the road climbs over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and descends to Marrakech. We drop you at your hotel in the evening. Want to continue from there? See our Marrakech private tours.

An Honest Look

Is 3 Days Enough From Fes To Marrakech?

A 3 days desert tour from Fes works well, and it is one of the best ways to cross Morocco. But the distances are real. Day one is the longest, because you go from Fes all the way to the dunes.

You have three ways to ease it:

  • Add a night. Sleep in Midelt or the Ziz Valley on night one and reach the dunes on day two. It turns one long day into two easy ones.
  • Extend the end. Add a night in Ouarzazate or the Draa Valley before Marrakech.
  • Go the other way. Travelling Marrakech to Merzouga starts with the High Atlas. See our 3 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.

Plan Ahead

Best Time To Go, And What To Pack

Best Time

  • Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are usually the most comfortable.
  • Winter brings snow to the Middle Atlas near Ifrane at times, and cold desert nights.
  • Summer is very hot in the south, so we plan it with care.

Pack List

  • A warm layer for the cedar forest and desert nights
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A scarf for sand and sun
  • Comfortable closed shoes
  • A small overnight bag for camp, with big bags left in the vehicle

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a 3 day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech?

It depends on group size, hotel and camp choices, and any upgrades. We do not publish a fixed price. Send your dates and we reply with a personal quote.

Is the tour private?

Yes. Your group travels alone with your driver-guide. You are never mixed with other travelers.

Which vehicles do you use?

A private Mercedes Vito or Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4, assigned by us to suit your group size. One vehicle for the whole trip, air-conditioned.

How long are the drives each day?

Roughly 8 to 9 hours on day one, 4 to 5 hours on day two, and 6 to 7 hours on day three, including stops. Day one is the longest. We confirm times before you travel.

Is Fes to Marrakech via the desert better than the direct road?

The direct road takes about one day. Going via Merzouga adds the cedar forest, the Ziz Valley, the dunes and the Dades Valley. It is a trip in itself, not a transfer.

Is 3 days enough?

It is enough to reach the dunes and sleep in the desert. A 4 day plan adds a night in the Dades Valley or Ouarzazate for a calmer pace.

Can I get a luxury camp?

Yes. We arrange a luxury tent in Erg Chebbi. Ensuite options and other upgrades depend on availability, which we confirm at booking.

Is a camel ride included?

A camel ride or a 4x4 transfer to camp is part of the plan. Tell us which you prefer.

What is not included?

Lunches, travel insurance, tips, extra activities such as quad biking, and personal expenses.

Can I do it the other way, Marrakech to Fes?

Yes. Many travelers do. See our 3 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, or ask us for a one-way route in either direction.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please read our cancellation policy before booking. We can answer questions by WhatsApp or email.
